Make It Yours Day

Are you all ready for Easter?   I hope you’ve had some time to work on a project or two anyway!

So what did you all do this week?  Anything new?  How did you add your own special spin when you redid it, revamped it or remodeled it?  Organized something?  Created or updated?  Cooked, sewed or decorated something new?   How’d you make it yours?

Each week I will highlight a few of my favorite posts from the links submitted, so check back and see if the spotlight is on you!  Thanks so much for linking up!

Mod Podge Chord Chart

DSC_0059
Our spare room/game room/guest room is the home of several resident guitars:  electric, acoustic and even a couple of Rock Band models.  My kids like to play around with them and up until recently, we’ve had a dog eared guitar chord poster thumb tacked to the wall.

I found this long narrow frame up in the closet.  You can actually see how long it’s been hiding in there.  It was, ahem, a bit dusty.

I  used my new friend, Mod Podge, along with some old sheet music, some scrapbook paper and some chords I printed off the internet to make a slightly better looking chord chart.  DSC_0019  DSC_0017

Prettied-Up Pot Holder

See my old sad potholder there?  Kind of worn out, huh?  See how it’s cozying up to those fabric scraps?  I think it’s dreaming of a Spring makeover.

Potholder Makeover
First, I gave it a haircut.  I never used those hanging loops anyway so I just snipped them right off.

Potholder haircut
I cut two pieces of fabric about a half inch larger on each side.  Then I placed the fabric squares right sides together, laid the potholder on top, and stitched around, leaving about three inches open to turn.

Potholder construction
When I stitched the pieces together, I squared off the corners so it would be easier to turn later.  Then I trimmed my corners and turned it inside out.

DIY potholder

I topstitched around the edge, catching the unstitched opening edges under.

Topstitching potholder
I thought it might be cute with a little more top stitching so I went around a few times, using the edge of my presser foot as a guide for the inside stitching lines.

Easy peasy!  If that potholder had feet, I’d say it had a bit of spring in it’s step!

Jute Map Frame Makeover

I found this awesome world map at National Geographic.  Lovely neutral colors and a great size to go over the couch in our guest room/game room/craft room.  I was looking for something big to fill in the large blank space above the couch.   This 4’ by 6’ laminated map definitely fits the bill.

National Geographic Wall Map
The edges were a little plain though.  I originally thought I’d buy some trim pieces and frame it out.  But I happened to be wandering through Wal-Mart’s fabric section and happened upon this:

Jute Upholstery Webbing
It’s jute upholstery webbing.   Priced at only $.67 per yard, I knew I had met my new frame.  I just tacked it up around the map, making mitered corners at each end.

Mitered Corners
To eliminate bulk at the corners, I cut out a triangular piece of the webbing before I hot glued the mitered corners together.

Jute Frame

I tacked the webbing to the wall using decorative upholstery nails I had leftover from my daughter’s no sew window treatment.

Jute Framed Map

I also ran the tiniest bead of hot glue between the edge of the webbing and the map to help the edges lay down nicely.

I love the color and texture the jute adds.

Coupon Chief

I do a lot of online shopping.  I just never seem to have time to browse around at the mall.  Each time I make an online purchase I search for coupon or promotion codes.

CouponChief.com recently invited me to peruse their vast supply of coupons.   I took a look and this is what I found.

couponchief

Coupon Chief  is a well organized, easy to navigate website for online coupon codes.    According to the company, they have over 50,000 coupons for over 15,000 stores, giving them one of the largest databases of online coupons on the net.   You can search by store, or by popular product categories.

Using coupons is always free.   If you choose to, you can create a user account where you can set up email alerts for your favorite stores, or participate in a program where you can download coupon codes to the website and get paid when people use them.

After taking a look, I definitely think I’ll be back to visit Coupon Chief when I make my next online purchase.

I received compensation for this post from CouponChief.com, however, all opinions are my own.
