Look to the Sky for Some Summer Fun!

It’s a bird, it’s a plane….no, it’s the Perseids!

One of my favorite things about late summer is the annual Perseid Meteor Shower.

The Perseids peak tonight, August 12, in the early morning hours after midnight.  (Technically, that would be August 13, but who’s keeping track?)  If the sky is clear, tonight should be great viewing since the moon is should be setting about 10 pm.

Tonight before bed, we’ll set up some chairs in the backyard.  Sometime after midnight, we’ll get up,  sit outside, drink a cup of cocoa and watch the night skies.  It really is pretty cool.

Here are a couple of links of you want to read more about meteor showers:  Stardate and Earthsky.

  1. thanks for sharing, i guess we will have to check it out!

  2. Thanks for reminding us!! We do meteor showers whenever we think of it.

I remember when my youngest was newborn. The Leonids were supposed to be the best they would be in one-hundred years. We packed her up and went out and watched.

  3. We're on our annual moms and kids vacation this week. My husband sent me an email about the meteor showers. Last night we grabbed our blankets and nine of us lined ourselves up on the lounge chairs by the pool. Flat on our backs, with no city lights around, we had a great time spotting "shooting stars". The kids thought it was really cool and the late night pool swimmers thought we were crazy.

  4. How cool. I wonder if we will be able to see them? It should be a clear night for us although we will have to skip the cocoa and try for something a little cooler like iced tea. We are in the country and we are always seeing shooting stars. We will have to keep an eye out tonight.

  5. one time, we camped outside in our yard until early dawn, waiting for meteor showers, it was really fun
