Read a Good Book Lately?

May 27, 2010

Read a good book?
I just finished up A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley.   It’s the story of an Iowa farm family in the 1970s.   A tragedy loosely based on Shakespeare’s King Lear, it is a well written, highly detailed narrative.  My grandparents were cattle ranchers and I really could identify with the descriptions of farm life, as well as the petty problems of very small towns.   With its insanity, incest, suicide, and illness, it wasn’t exactly a feel good novel, but it was well written and definitely worth reading.

Next up:  The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.  I am loving this darling book so far!

I just love a good book and am looking forward to lazier summer days.  What have you read lately that you could recommend?

  1. I remember my Dad reading Smiley's book back when it first came out and being super-impressed with the psychological realism in it. I grew up in Western Kansas so it would be super-duper familiar.

I am on a reading lull right now but right before I lulled I finished Francine Rivers' Mark of the Lion series - real page turning stuff.

  2. hi carolyn! if you liked that you should try the book of ruth by jane hamilton. it is an incredible story about one small mistake in a small town. the moment when a friend was watching her friend's child and for one moment the child slipped away and drowned on the property. i am not giving anything away as you learn that in the beginning, but it is quite a story.
